Frequently Asked Questions
What is an MOT?
An MOT is a legal test that checks whether a vehicle meets minimum safety and environmental standards required to be driven on UK roads. Driving a vehicle without an MOT could result in a fine, penalty points and invalid insurance. An MOT test follows strict criteria set by the DVSA, which includes checks on brakes, steering and suspension, tyres and wheels, lights and indicators, seatbelts, windscreen, wipers and washers, exhaust and emissions, and body structure and general condition. The test will be carried out by someone accredited by the DVSA to assess your vehicle. However, an MOT does not cover the mechanical condition of the engine or guarantee the vehicle won’t break down. You will be provided with a new MOT certificate if the vehicle passes, with a list of minor items that will require attention in the future.
When should you get an MOT?
It is a legal requirement to get your vehicle’s MOT before the expiry date on your current certificate. For most vehicles younger than three years, it does not need an MOT test until the third anniversary of when it was registered. Some vehicles, such as taxis, private hire vehicles and ambulances, require an MOT one year after being registered. The MOT test can be completed up to 28 days before the expiry date and will remain valid until the original date the following year.
How long will the MOT take?
The test will take between 45 minutes and one hour to complete.
What should I do if my vehicle fails its MOT?
If the vehicle fails its MOT test, you will receive a list of the major or dangerous faults and a retest can be arranged. You can still drive the vehicle as long as you have a valid MOT certificate that has not yet expired if no ‘dangerous’ problems are found.
What should I do if my MOT certificate has expired?
You can only legally drive a vehicle that has an expired MOT certificate to a garage for a scheduled MOT test so it needs to be booked in immediately before using it again. The vehicle must have insurance but it can be driven to an MOT test centre even if it is SORN and doesn’t have car tax. The penalty for driving a vehicle without an MOT certificate is a fine up to £1,000. However, if you drive a car that has failed a test and is deemed as ‘dangerous’ then you can be fined up to £2,500, receive three points on your licence and be banned from driving.
Do electric vehicles need an MOT?
Electric and hybrid vehicles still need an MOT if they are three years old or more but the emissions test is not required.
